Leading the kitchen is Chef Alessandro Polledri, whose influences span from his Ligurian heritage to bold Sicilian flavors. Here, Alessandro and his team immerse guests in explorations of the storied cuisine’s lesser-known traditions. The season-driven menu highlights thoughtfully sourced ingredients, including imported cheeses and cured meats, while the wine list shares the kitchen’s ethos of discovery outside of the mainstream. The result is an experience reminiscent of spontaneous holiday drop-ins to charming Roman osterias.

Enjoy a 7-course menu at Rufino Osteria. The menu is chef’s choice, so dishes rotate regularly and reflect the best produce of the season. Start with creamy stracciatella topped with sautéed Swiss chard and a drizzle of olive oil. Then, taste ‘crostino con brandacujun’ – a Ligurian-inspired dish of rye crostini served with creamed salted cod and potato, topped with black olives. Savor ‘asparagi con tuorlo d’uovo e maionese all’aglio orsino’ – poached asparagus topped with egg yolk gel, ramson aioli, and parmigiano foam. Taste oxtail and mortadella meatballs served with Parmigiano Reggiano cream, Bolognese-style stewed onions and tomatoes, and crisped prosciutto crudo. Revel in ‘fettuccine con ragù di scottiglia’ – handmade fettuccine served with a ragù of veal, chicken, pork sausage, and rabbit, finished with rosemary butter. Eat potato gnocchi coated in a pesto of sun-dried tomatoes from Napoli, basil, and almonds, topped with ricotta salata. For dessert, indulge in Rufino’s signature tiramisù with toasted hazelnuts, bold espresso, and rich gianduja cream.

Rufino Osteria quietly opened in the spring of 2016 on the bustling corner of Strandgade and Torvegade. Backed by a team of Italian chefs, it became the first of Copenhagen’s new wave of Italian restaurants to showcase fresh, handmade pasta. Its tucked-away location and unique approach to Italian gastronomy were a welcome culinary reprieve, earning five stars from Politiken for its world-class dishes and cozy interiors. The pasta is still made fresh each morning from the chef’s family recipe, but the menu has evolved to include explorations of Italy’s hidden culinary gems – all alongside an ever-changing selection of self-imported cheeses and meats, seasonal antipasti, and curated wines.
